To understand the Vedic timeline, it is best to look at it as a “nested” clock, where the smallest units (Human years) build up into the life of the Creator (Brahma).

Here is the hierarchy from the Highest (Universal Scale) to the Lowest (Human Scale):
Level 1: Maha-Kalpa (The Life of Brahma)
This is the longest cycle in the material universe.
- Duration: 100 Brahma Years (approx. 311.04 Trillion Human Years).
- Activity: At the start of this period, Brahma is born from the navel of Vishnu. At the end, Brahma and the entire universe are absorbed back into Maha-Vishnu.
- Current Status: Brahma is in his 51st year.
Level 2: Kalpa (A Day of Brahma)
A single “daytime” in the life of Brahma.
- Duration: 4.32 Billion Human Years.
- Activity: Creation is active. At the end of a Kalpa, Brahma sleeps for an equal period (Night of Brahma), and a partial dissolution (Pralaya) occurs.
- Current Status: We are in the Shveta Varaha Kalpa.
Level 3: Manvantara (The Age of a Manu)
A Kalpa is divided into 14 Manvantaras, each ruled by a “Manu” (the first man/progenitor of that era).
- Duration: 71 Mahayugas (approx. 306.72 Million Human Years).
- Activity: Each Manu establishes the laws for humanity and maintains order for his specific era.
- Current Status: We are in the 7th Manvantara, ruled by Vaivasvata Manu.
Level 4: Mahayuga (The Great Cycle)
Each Manvantara consists of 71 Mahayugas. One Mahayuga is a complete cycle of the four ages.
- Duration: 4.32 Million Human Years.
- Activity: The cycle of virtue rising and falling.
- Current Status: We are in the 28th Mahayuga of the current Manvantara.
Level 5: The Yugas (The Four Ages)
A Mahayuga is divided into four distinct ages of declining righteousness (Dharma).
- Satya Yuga: 1,728,000 years (The Golden Age).
- Treta Yuga: 1,296,000 years (The Silver Age).
- Dvapara Yuga: 864,000 years (The Bronze Age).
- Kali Yuga: 432,000 years (The Iron/Dark Age).
- Current Status: We are roughly 5,127 years into Kali Yuga.
